“Does Oral Storytelling Help First

Graders Become Better Writers?”

by Teresa Wagner and Kim Cody

A peer reviewed, online journal for teachers and teacher educators

Oral Storytelling is more than a culture’s way of preserving folklore and passing down generational history. While it has been long recognized as a prima facie method for historical preservation prior to the written word, it turns out that oral storytelling can also be used to augment and improve students’ writing in first grade. In this study, the students’ writing was evaluated both before and after introducing oral storytelling. It was found that oral storytelling had a positive impact on students’ writing in the areas of Content, Organization, and Style. After students shared their stories verbally, the written stories were longer and contained more details. A paired sample t-test signified a large difference between the pre- storytelling and post-storytelling in three out of the four categories measured (p < .001). An improvement in students’ attitudes about writing was also observed. This paper is being published by the Otterbein College Graduate Education Program.
